This is what greeted us at the work site Monday morning.
The slab for the church sanctuary had been poured and was ready
for us to complete the church in the next six days. |
|
One of the first tasks was to construct the beams that would
support the roof. These were laminated 2x10s and we needed to
allow time for the glue to dry. From front: Dennis
Bratcher, Billy Childs, Charles "Dick" Spears, [--], others. |
|
Wesley Smith and John Beadles lay some of the first blocks of
the building. Most of us took a turn at laying blocks. |
|
Mortar for the blocks had to be mixed on site. The work
progressed so quickly that calls for "more mud" kept us
constantly mixing. Dennis Bratcher |
|
We always had a "cheering section" of children, here supervising
the "mud pit." The boy in the center, Daniel, could not
quite get the name Dennis, so he said my name in Spanish was
Daniel. Convenient. |

Roberto Moreno, Jr., son of the District Superintendent, meets
Stephen Heap, who served as the team's primary translator.
Roberto was helping out in mixing mortar. At left, Joe

The walls are starting to go up. This is midday of the first
full day of work. |

Team members [--] and [--] cut framing for windows and doors;
assembled framing is at left. |

Rev. Roberto Moreno (right), the District Superintendent of the
North Mexico District of the Church of the Nazarene, stopped by
to encourage the team. At left is a local carpenter who
helped supervise the construction of the Church. I do not
have his name. |
|
Ron McElfresh and [--] cut framing members while others install
the framing. |
|
With everyone staying busy, work is moving incredibly quickly. |

Another view of the worksite. |
|
Team members take a well deserved break. |
|
Most of us quickly embraced the idea of siesta. |

There's more than one way to get some rest. John Beadles. |

church; the entry door is at the corner on the left. |

Walls only need a few more courses. |

Finishing up the sixth course of blocks laid today. The walls
are nearing completion. |

The side bracing is for the window framing. Just beneath
and beyond the support timbers is the "mud pit" where mortar was
mixed. |
